Instructional Strategies
I believe that teachers must use a variety of instruction strategies to bring the curriculum to life and engage their students. By interweaving aspects of curriculum and instruction, all students can learn given appropriate contexts. I have included a candy cane math activity focusing on patterns. In this lesson students are encouraged to create a pattern and then show evidence of their interpretation using the graphic organizer provided. This allows me to gauge where students are at in their learning and gives me with the opportunity to differentiate the learning based on individual abilities.
Extension of Learning - In this activity students are required to think about what they love and communicate their feelings through art. Once they completed their artwork we did a think, pair, share activity where students were given the opportunity to peer-assess. I then had students who were comfortable sharing, explain what they liked about their partners’ artwork and something that was different from their own. I would then have students write a sentence about what they love.
Classroom Management
I believe that in order for true student equity to be achieved, teachers must create a classroom space where all students are able to feel comfortable to take risks and challenge themselves as a means to further develop their understanding of course content, critical thinking skills, and self-confidence. I have included an example of an anchor chart displayed in the classroom that was used as a checklist for students to assess their own behaviour. Students can refer to the chart throughout the week and remind themselves of the expectations. If a student is not exhibiting one of the character traits, I would simply point at the chart to give students an opportunity to self-correct their behaviour.
Assessment
I have learned how integral it is to use a variety of assessments as a way of evaluating my own teaching practice as well as support student learning.I work hard to incorporate my diagnostic assessment so that I can gauge where my students are coming from and where I want them to be. With that being said, it's also important that I engage my students in meta cognition through reflecting on their strengths and weaknesses for any given task.
Student work using graphic organizer demonstrates their writing ability for teacher assessment.
Anchor chart co-created with students using sight words. Students identified the sight words within words such as [to][day].
